Altered Jar: Beach Memories

A few of the treasures I returned with from our beach trip were lots and lots of seashells plus a bag of sand. I decided to use some of the sand and a few of my favorite small shells to create an altered jar.

This was so easy and fun, I'm thinking I might do one for future beach trips too changing the style & size of the jar.

Supplies: jar (from Michaels - $1!); sand & shells from the beach; white cardstock; Making Memories tag rim & eyelet; Brush Script Std font; Blue Moon Beads sandfish charm; hemp cord.

Lists & Coupons

I learned the value of coupon shopping from my mom. Although, admittedly, I found them somewhat annoying to deal with until I had to pay my own bills. Funny how that works. ;)

These days I organize my coupons in a big 3-ring binder with a zipper closure. It makes it easy for me to flip through and find the coupon I want. I try to pull most before we head out to the store & stick them in a plastic pencil pocket in the front. Others I will grab as I need while we shop.

Realizing I will soon be juggling a baby in a carrier seat along, I don't want to even pretend to try and carry the binder with me on every grocery trip. Instead, I went back to a craft project I bookmarked months ago on Elizabeth's Covered in Crafts blog - an altered folder organizer. It struck me as a fun craft project and simple way to store my shopping list & coupons for a specific trip that I could easily just drop into my purse or the diaper bag.

Here's my completed project:

And the inside:

Supplies: manila file folder; Bazzill (white), Stampin' Up (green) and the Paper Company (blue) cardstock; TaDa patterned papers; QuicKutz Moxie font; American Crafts ribbon; Xyron adhesive and laminate/adhesive cartridges.

Baby Product Manuals

After our baby shower in May, I began to realize just how many product manuals we were accumulating. I didn't want to misplace any of them or related receipts so I grabbed some page protectors and an extra binder we had to organize them. This week I dug through my stash of scrapbooking supplies to create a fun cover for it:

In it's designated spot in the nursery closet:

Supplies: Avery binder; miscellaneous white cardstock; Die Cuts with a View patterned paper; Making Memories and American Crafts letter stickers.

Blog Hop Wrap Up

I had fun participating in Scrappin' Mojo's blog hop this past weekend. Ten of us hosted challenges on our blogs with chances to win small RAKs and one chance to win the grand prize of Bo Bunny scrapping goodies from Scrappin' Mojo. Winners will be announced in the Scrappin' Mojo Forum tomorrow by 12 noon.

Here are the projects I created for the challenges...

For Marcie's challenge to complete at layout with a cute little nature animal and Stella's challenge to use a non-alpha stamp on a layout.
Supplies: Recollections cardstock; Staz-On black stamp pad; Studio G stamp; Marvy LePlume markers; Micron black pen.

Terri challenged us to make a card. I made one that we will send to Trent's younger brother after the baby arrives.
Supplies: Bazzill cardstock; miscellaneous white cardstock; Staz-On brown ink pad (edges); American Crafts letter stickers; QuicKutz Moxie font; Die Cuts with a View adhesive backed cardstock; TaDa patterned paper.

Tackled three with this layout of Trent's softball season - Angela's sports themed layout; Niki's red, white & blue color scheme; and Diana's sketch challenge.
Supplies: Cosmo Cricket patterned paper; Bazzill and misc cardstock; EK Success border punch & stickers; Martha Stewart Crafts sepia pen.

My final layout was for Jan's challenge to scrap your most recent favorite photo and Sophia's white only challenge. The latter took a lot of thinking especially since 99% of my scrapping supplies have some sort of color to them.
Supplies: Bazzill cardstock; EK Success corner punch; Prima flowers; Making Memories snaps; Basic Grey chipboard; white acrylic paint; Heidi Swapp chipboard.

I've been meaning to label these fabric bins in our laundry closet since we reorganized it last year. Danielle's challenge to create a home decor project using scrapping supplies inspired me to finally get around to it.

And I made a tag for a similar bin we have in the nursery closet that currently holds all of the small toys.
Supplies: Paper Reflections tag; American Crafts ribbon; Die Cuts with a View adhesive backed cardstock; QuicKutz dies; Staz-On black stamp pad; Daisy Hill acrylic stamps; fiber from 7gypsies album packaging; Dymo label maker.

Altered Notepad

Jess shared a post earlier this week on altering a notepad. I loved the idea and used it for my little craft project last night. Lately I've had so many things on my mind that I really need to be carrying a small notepad with me to keep track. Using a few odds and ends from my stash, I quickly recovered a boring red notepad we had into a much cuter floral one. ;) I used the Xyron laminate/adhesive cartridge to adhere it all and give the cover a little more durability (thus the shine in my photo).

Supplies: Basic Grey patterned paper; Prima flower; Making Memories acrylic flower and tiny alpha letter stickers; Heidi Swapp journaling spot; black stamp ink; Xyron laminate/permanent adhesive cartridge; notepad.

Dinner & Christmas in May

My friend, Kim, is in town from Atlanta and we went out to dinner last night at Joe's Place Featuring Joe's Mom's Food. [Yes, that really is the restaurant's name. :D ] While trying to decide where to go, she mentioned wanting vegetables and Joe's Place immediately came to mind. They offer an all-you-can eat vegetable plate with a good selection of southern favorites.

Joe's Place has been around since 1979 and almost closed 2 years ago. After much urging from customers in Raleigh and across the state, the owner kept the restaurant open. A banner from his news conference in March 2006 stating the change of heart, still hangs over the counter today. It's partially visible in this photo I took and reads: Wow. We didn't know y'all loved us that much, so we're gonna do an encore.

During a last minute get together in December, Kim & I both forgot our Christmas gifts for each other! And while we had good intentions of shipping them, that never happened. So last night we had fun giving each other a little bit of Christmas in May.

Just before Christmas, Kim had gotten a new ipod so I picked her up a giftcard to download some tunes and altered a gift box to match.

She spoiled me with this beautiful handmade bowl. I was floored. I've tried using a potter's wheel in the past and have absolutely no skill at it. My friend has talent. The photo doesn't do this bowl justice - totally gorgeous. Thanks, Kim!! :)

Altered CD Pockets

In my Randomness post last month, I mentioned that I enjoy visiting National Parks & Historic Sites to get cancellation stamps in my Passport Book. We learned before our trip last fall that Disney has a passport book for Epcot. I almost forgot about it while there until Trent reminded me. We found one at a gift shop and, admittedly, it was more for kids, but we had a fun time visiting all eleven "countries" in the World Showcase getting cancellation stamps. (I think we amused the cast members by being the only adults doing this. LOL)

I wanted a way to include the passport in my album that allowed it to be pulled out. My first thought was a library pocket. I've looked in stores & online since the trip and have not been able to find one that is the right size. Last night in Target, I stumbled across a package of paper CD sleeves by greenroom eco. Finally a good impulse buy. ;) They are the perfect size.

I altered a red one to hold the passport and adhered it inside the front cover of the album:
Supplies: greenroom eco CD sleeve; Making Memories sticker & rub-on letters; Foof-fa-la rub-on; My Mind's Eye rub-on letters; Martha Stewart Crafts sepia pen. Inspired by Apr 23 of dw2008.

I altered a second sleeve to hold a CD with photos from the trip:Supplies: greenroom eco CD sleeve; Making Memories sticker & rub-on letters; Li'l Davis rub-on letters; miscellaneous camera die cut from stash. Inspired by Apr 18 & 23 of dw2008.

Altered Binders

One of the challenges this month in the designing with 2008 calendar is to alter a binder. I had 2 binders in my kitchen that were functional, but ugly. One stores recipes I've printed from the internet, torn out of magazines, etc. The other holds menus from local restaurants. Yesterday I picked up a 2-pack of Avery view binders to alter and replace the old, ugly 2.

My new "Favorite Recipes" binder:

Supplies: Avery binder; We R Memory Keepers patterned paper; My Mind's Eye "frame ups"; Making Memories TinyAlpha; QuicKutz Sunshine font; Die Cuts with a View adhesive backed cardstock; generic staples; white CS; black ink pad.

My new "Menus" binder:

I was also inspired by Mar 12 of dw2008 for this design. The prompt was to print digital paper to use. I created my own paper by scanning some of the menus, "tossing" them around in Photoshop, and then printing on a marbled grey/white cardstock.

Supplies: Avery binder; Archiver's black cardstock; misc "marbled" grey/white cardstock; Die Cuts with a View adhesive backed cardstock; QuicKutz Studio classic font.

Oranges and Bananas

It's always interesting to see where blog hits come from. Lately, with Valentine's approaching, my Valentine's Candy Jar post is getting a bit of attention as well as my altered jar post. The latter was mentioned last week in a post on the Orange Exchange blog. If anyone has altered a jar that was inspired by my posts, please let me know. I'd love to see. :)

And, to the other fruit half of my post.... ;)
I think I caught a couple readers off guard with the cauliflower in the banana bread. It was pureed after being steamed which eliminated the typical cauliflower texture. Honestly, I couldn't taste it. If you have any picky eaters, I'd recommend this cookbook. So far we haven't had anything that tastes bad and I am picky so that saying a lot.

Altering Jars

I had a couple of questions regarding the altered Valentine Candy Jar I posted earlier today and wanted to address them. The "i love you" on the front of the jar is a rub-on by Making Memories (Rub-on Minis Love 2). I first came to the idea of adding rub-ons to glass jars while flipping through the November calendar pages of designing with 2006. The prompt for Nov 10 was to "embellish plain containers with rub-ons." I tried it on a small spice jar that I store buttons in and was thrilled with the results.

Last summer I decided to play around with a large jar for the family beach house. One of our favorite activities is to head a few blocks south to the arcade. Quarters are forever piled up here and there around the rooms. I picked up a jar from the kitchen section at Target to give these quarters a festive home. Since the theme was "arcade" I picked some fun rub-on letters by Making Memories and created a top inspired by PacMan. :)

The rub-ons can be applied the same as you would to any other material. For some, it might take a little more pressure. The jars with flatter areas (Valentine Candy Jar and Arcade Fund Jar) are easier to apply the rub-ons to than rounder jars such as the Buttons Jar.

To create the top for the Arcade Fund Jar, I cut a circle of Scenic Route patterned paper just smaller than the lid. I loved this particular design since it has the feel of movement and the PacMan dots. I used my QuicKutz to cut a circle of yellow cardstock and sliced out a section for the mouth with my X-acto knife. A Making Memories brad created the eye. I hand drew and cut the ghost shapes from other scraps of cardstock I had in my stash. All three figures are outlined in black pen. Finally, I adhered the design to the lid using my Xyron 510.

As with the Valentine Candy Jar, I tied a scrap of ribbon around the neck of the jar. For this jar, I added a Making Memories clip to hold any extra tickets from the arcade - another item that's found loose around the house. Now, we can grab a handful of quarters and any extra tickets before we head out to play. :)

Button Jar Supplies: spice jar from World Market; Making Memories buttons & stitches; Li'l Davis rub-on letters; misc. green acrylic paint (scuffed w/ a sanding block).

Arcade Fund Jar Supplies: jar from Target; Making Memories rub-on letters, metal clip & brad; Scenic Route patterned paper; QuicKutz circle die from Icing starter kit; misc. cardstock & ribbon from stash.

Garden City Arcade layout Supplies: misc. dark brown and green cardstock; We R Memory Keepers patterned paper; Marcella K rub-on stitches; Making Memories TinyAlpha letter stickers, eyelets & date stamp; Miss Elizabeth foam letters; Uniball signo white pen

Valentine Candy Jar

2ps blog challenge:
Are you making anything special for Valentine's Day? If so, share it with us.
Well, I can't share anything for this year as I might spoil a surprise, but I can share something I made last year. Part of Trent's gift was this altered candy jar - filled with M&M's. :)

Supplies: Provo Craft jar from Michael's ($1); Making Memories metal tag rim, sweets heart, pink/white ribbon, and "i love you" rub-on; misc red ribbon & patterned paper from my stash; Micron black pen. Inspired by Nov 10 of dw2006 and Feb 10/11 of dw2007.

Coupons Galore

No scrapping for me tonight. Trent & I attended our annual HOA meeting and got home around 9pm. Since then I've been sorting through some coupons to work out a possible trade with another user at Hot Coupon World. Great place to learn about deals and make some swaps.

Right now though, my coupons for trading are a wreck. Normally they are stored by category in this blue index card box on my desk which I altered for some "cuteness factor." ;) And a few still are in there. But.... ever since my vacation earlier in the month, the coupons have been clipped, but not organized. And not listed on my Have List at HCW for trading. (That poor list is still showing coupons that expired at the end of October! *gasp*)

Here is a small idea of what the insert coupons from the last 3 Sundays (11/4, 11/11 and 11/18) look like: Yup, a big jumbled mess. I at least tossed them in an empty shoebox sized storage container so they aren't flying all over the desk or turning into toys for the cats. But they are still a mess nonetheless. Hopefully by this weekend they will start to fall into their rightful place in my "Coupons for Trade" box so I can begin to trade more regularly on HCW again. :)

Coupon Box Supplies: hand-me-down box (thanks, Christopher!); Chatterbox patterned paper; Making Memories rub-ons and TinyAlpha stickers; Doodlebug rub-ons.

Advent Calendar

While blog surfing this morning, I came across a post on of cats and cardstock blog titled "One more reason to go to Starbucks." I was already leaning toward a stop by Starbucks anyhow (a little caffeine comes in handy when chasing - I mean teaching ;) - three to six year olds during Sunday School) and seeing her beautiful altered advent calendar solidified it. Off I went for a cup of iced Mocha (yes, iced - that Sunday School classroom is HOT) and an advent calendar.

After lunch, I pulled out lots of fun scraps & stash to begin altering it. Flipped the XM Radio on our satellite to Holiday Traditions to help get into the Christmas spirit. And a bit later I had my own altered calendar.

Here are photos of the results. It's now proudly sitting on the top of the entertainment center in our living room.

Supplies: Autumn Leaves Foof-a-La, Chatterbox, Cosmo Cricket, Paper Salon, Provo Craft and Scenic Route patterned papers; QuicKutz Moxie, Sunshine and Tangerine fonts; Jolee's Boutique sticker; Making Memories metal charms, brads, eyelets, rub-ons, cardboard stickers, TinyAlpha stickers, wordfetti; Li'l Davis rub-ons; silver stamp ink pad from Target $ spot; Uniball Signo silver pen; Die Cuts with a View adhesive backed cardstock; KI Memories present sticker; rub-ons; snowflake punches.
